A seminal figure in the history of Men's Tennis, Roger Stein '85 was a premiere player whose ground-breaking achievements laid the foundation for today's nationally competitive program.

Recruited by Division Il schools, Stein chose Skidmore in order to pursue dual passions for music and tennis. The freshman quickly assumed the #1singles and #1 doubles position, emerging as division and conference individual champion. Together with doubles partner Jim Coleman '85, Stein captured seven division and conference titles, both firsts in program history. In his sophomore year, Stein and his team became the first Thoroughbreds to qualify for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national championships. He remained Skidmore's #1singles and #1 doubles player throughout his career. The first Thoroughbred to qualify individually for the Rolex Invitational (1984), he bested numerous All-American Division III players, losing in the quarterfinals to Princeton's top seeded player in a tight match. Stein returned to the event his senior year as team captain.

After graduating, he became a pro at Tennisport in Manhattan, where he trained with top 50 Association of Tennis Professionals players, including John McEnroe. He later helped coach the women's tennis team at Duke University while studying law there. Former Athletic Director Jeff Segrave recalls Stein as "a national-level talent who remains one of the best singles player Skidmore has ever seen.”
