From the day she arrived at Skidmore, Becky Herman was determined to transform challenges into victories. In the process, she became one of the best defensive players in the history of Women’s Volleyball.
The freshman took on the sport’s newly created position of “libero” with complete and total ease,” notes Head Coach Hilda Arrechea, “like something she had been doing all her life.” But, through a combination of talent and competitive grit, the rookie Thoroughbred earned Defensive Player of the Year honors from the New York Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (2002). She would retain that distinction for each successive year of her collegiate career, (2003- 2005).
Concurrently named All-Liberty League (2002-2005), Becky’s star shone brightly on the national stage as a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America selection (2003-2005). She continues to be ranked one of the best defensive players in program history. On the national level, says Coach Arrechea, “Becky is one of the best liberos to ever play the game.” She is 6th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association record book for career digs and 19th in career digs per set.
Team captain her junior and senior years, Becky, adds the coach, “was a quiet leader who frustrated opponents and inspired teammates.”
