A prolific scorer and team leader, Dana Freier helped Women's Basketball grow into a formidable regional and national competitor. Her record-shattering performance was matched by an unwavering commitment to supporting her teammates. A two-sport athlete, Dana also displayed remarkable athleticism in Women's Lacrosse. She has served as one of Skidmore Athletics' most ardent advocates for decades.
Women's Basketball's Rookie of the Year (1984), Dana led in rebounds, was 2nd in total points and 3rd in steals. As a sophomore, she advanced to team leader in total and per game rebounds and points, earning a place on the Connecticut College All-Tournament and Skidmore Invitational teams. Her prowess on the court continued to grow during the 1986-87 season; co-captain, MVP and team high scorer, she was ranked 17th in the nation for total rebounds and rebounds per game.
As senior tri-captain, Dana intensified her offensive game and was selected for the Skidmore Invitational and Seven Sisters All-Tournament teams. She capped her final season by breaking all-time records for career points (1,114 with an average PPG of 12.8) and career rebounds (862 with an average RPG of 9.9). Dana's influence extended far beyond scoring, recalls former teammate and Hall of Famer Tracey Watson '86, who coached her during the 1987-88 season.
“Dana was the glue that held that team together through a great deal of transition. She embodied the heart, the passion and the spirit that every program wishes for.”
