This outstanding Thoroughbred helped re-write the record books for Men's Baseball on both an individual and a team level. Clifton "Ned" Watkins '00 drew upon his extraordinary talent, thoughtful leadership and sheer grit - to unite teammates behind a successful bid to become league champions.

Ranked near the top of almost every offensive category, Ned continues to be all-time leader in career batting average (.368), stolen bases (154), hits (166) and runs scored (136). His career record remains among the best for all-time RBI, slugging percentage, walks and games played. A two-time Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association First Team selection (1999, 2000), Ned helped lead the Thoroughbreds to their first UCAA Championship in 1999. As a senior, he captained the men as they developed a new level of confidence and competitive strength.

Ron Plourde, who coached Ned during his junior and senior years, recalls, "Ned was an exceptional player with lightening quick hands and amazing speed both in the outfield and on the bases. It was a true joy to watch his athleticism, unparalleled work ethic, passion and love for his teammates."

Ned's performance - as a player and a leader – helped transform the Thoroughbreds into a focused, cohesive and winning team. That legacy continues to inform the program today.
