Babson Park, Mass. - The Skidmore College field hockey team picked up a 3-1 non-conference win over Babson, Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-0, while the Beavers fall to 1-1.
Six different players recorded points for Skidmore, beginning when junior
Ceilidh MacNeill assisted sophomore
Kelly Blackhurst on the game's first goal just under 11 minutes into the contest. The Thoroughbreds then made it 2-0 later in the half, when senior
Annie Rosencrans converted a pass from junior
Anna Wahl at 33:17.
First-year Hannah Feneberg put Babson on the board midway through the second half, as she tallied her fourth goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Morgan Lockwood at 58:38. However, Lauren Tobias pushed Skidmore's lead back to two when she scored off a Caylyn Sullivan assist at 66:32, capping off the 3-1 Thoroughbred victory.
"The win was a total team effort," said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck. "Our defense survived the opening minutes, as Babson mounted a strong offensive surge, and settled in to their game.
"Kelly Blackhurst opened the scoring on a goal off a corner insert from Ceilidh MadNeill. The offense continued to knock at the door and Annie Rosencrans scored on a nice feed from Anna Wahl.
"Simultaneous injuries to defenders Jess Dankner and Hilary Cranston was challenging, but the team handled the adversity well. Both players rallied and re-entered the game. Dankner later got patched up with ten stitches above her eye. The heat and humditiy became increasingly problematic as the game wore on. Babson was able to connect with about 10 minutes left in the game to narrow the margin to a 2-1 Skidmore lead. After a Thoroughbred time out, Skidmore settled again and sealed the victory with a goal by Lauren Tobias on an assist from Caylyn Sullivan. Annie Weis and goalkeeper Haley McDougall locked down the defense, while Caylyn Sullivan was a force in the midfield."
First-year goalie
Haley McDougall finished with six saves in the win for Skidmore, while senior Jess Pashos turned away 17 shots in net for Babson.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on September 10 at New Paltz.
