Skidmore names Kate Lenox head field hockey coach

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Skidmore College has named Kate Lenox as its new head field hockey coach, athletics director Gail Cummings-Danson announced.

Lenox brings a strong background in NCAA Division III athletics, with experience building competitive programs, developing student-athletes, and leading successful recruiting efforts. She joins Skidmore after serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Williams College, where she helped guide the Ephs to a Final Four appearance in 2024 and multiple NCAA Tournament runs.

"We are thrilled to welcome Kate Lenox to Skidmore as our new head field hockey coach," Cummings-Danson said. "Kate brings an exceptional understanding of the Division III student-athlete experience, along with a proven ability to develop high-performing teams and strong team culture. Her success as a coach and recruiter, combined with her commitment to holistic student development, makes her an outstanding fit for our program and Skidmore College.

"Kate's energy, leadership, and passion for the game will enhance the strong legacy of Skidmore field hockey and inspire our student-athletes to excel both on the field and in the classroom. We are excited for the future of Skidmore field hockey under her direction."

Lenox has been part of one of the nation's top programs at Williams, contributing to a record-setting 2024 season that included 14 wins and a 9–1 conference mark. She was also a member of the 2024 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Coaching Staff of the Year and has played a key role in developing all-region and all-conference student-athletes. Her responsibilities have included recruiting coordination, player development, scouting and game strategy, and oversight of video analysis and program operations.

Prior to her return to Williams, Lenox served as head coach at Clark University from 2020 to 2023, where she led a turnaround of the program and oversaw all aspects of team operations. In her first season, she helped improve the team's record significantly while establishing a culture centered on accountability, competitiveness, and growth. Her experience also includes coaching stints at Union College and extensive involvement in club and youth field hockey.

"I am truly grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead the Skidmore Field Hockey program," Lenox said. "Skidmore's strong tradition of academic and athletic excellence, combined with its commitment to developing the whole student-athlete, makes it an exceptional place.

"I would like to thank Gail Cummings-Danson, the search committee, and the athletic department for this opportunity. I have tremendous respect for the foundation built by Beth Hallenbeck and her staff and look forward to building on that legacy as we continue to elevate the program."

A former collegiate student-athlete at Mercyhurst University, Lenox earned her bachelor's degree in sport business management before completing an MBA at Niagara University. As a player, she was a four-time NFHCA Academic Team selection and PSAC Scholar Athlete.

Known for her emphasis on player development, team culture, and academic success, Lenox has built a reputation as a coach who prioritizes the full student-athlete experience. Her background in recruiting, mentorship, and program management aligns closely with Skidmore's mission and competitive aspirations.

Lenox becomes the next leader of a program with a strong tradition in the Liberty League and will guide the Thoroughbreds into their next chapter beginning with the 2026 season.

Lenox will begin officially in mid-May.
