Castleton, Vt.— The 7th ranked Skidmore College field hockey team opened its season with a 3-0 non-league win at Castleton State College.
Kelly Blackhurst scored twice for the Thoroughbreds, while
Haley McDougall had four saves for for her first shutout in her first collegiate game.
Skidmore fired 10 shots on goal in the first half before
Annie Rosencrans found the back of the cage from
Molly Gile just before the end of the half for a 1-0 lead.
Rosencrans set Blackhurst up at 46:27 to make it 2-0 and then closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 67:38.
"The season opener was a great team effort," said Skidmore coach
Beth Hallenbeck. "Despite statistical and field domination, the thick field turf and improved Castleton squad made for a slow start, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Haley McDougall was sharp and denied some key chances for the Spartans. Defensively,
Annie Weis was flawless, and locked down the defensive end with key help from Jess Dankner and
Hilary Cranston.
Kelly Blackhurst and
Annie Rosencrans let the way offensively, creating many chances and working tirelessly to win the ball. Rookie players
Pauline Searles and
Sam Skott also made excellent contributions on the offense."
The Thoroughbreds outshot Castleton 20-6 and had a 12-6 corner advantage.
McDougall had three of her four saves in the second half.
Skidmore travels to Babson College on Saturday.
