Dea Koiava will meet in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional singles semifinal, as the Skidmore College women's tennis team wrapped up day two action on Sunday.
Fukushige, the top seed, defeated 16
th-seeded Sarra Yekta of Vassar in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16, then got by eighth-seeded Sophia Aulicino of Hamilton in the quarterfinal 6-3, 6-2. Koiava, seeded sixth, defeated 14
th-seeded Katrine Luddy of TCNJ 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16, then upset fourth-seeded Frances Cornwall of Vassar in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-1.
The semifinal winner will face the winner of NYU's Flyora Shiyanova and Coco Kulle, guaranteeing a Skidmore-NYU final in singles.
Freshman
Audrey SooHoo nearly disrupted the other end of the bracket. After dropping the first set in her round of 16 match to the fifth-seeded Shiyanova, the 15
th seed dominated in a second set win. SooHoo would eventually fall by a narrow margin in the final set, with the final score going the way of Shiyanova, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Freshman
Sofia Carlsson also fell in the round of 16, as the 10
th seed fell to Aulicino, 6-2, 7-5 to complete her first ITA tournament.
In doubles, the team of Fukushige and Koiava would make a run to the semifinal. The top-ranked doubles duo defeated sixth-seeded Andrea Giacobbo and Grace Minassian of TCNJ in the quarterfinal 8-1, before falling just short to the defending champions in Shiyanova and Kulle, 8-7.
The ITA Northeast Regional will conclude on Monday.
