First year Nandini Chandra went 5-0 on the weekend.
NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Skidmore College women's tennis team wrapped up a competitive weekend of competition at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament hosted by Smith College and Amherst College from Friday to Sunday.
Competing in a best two out of three match format with singles and doubles counted together, the Thoroughbreds saw all eight Skidmore players finish as winners of their respective bracket back draws.
FROM COACH SPEERSCHNEIDER
"We started a bit shaky the first day and missed some opportunities to advance in the main draws of both the A and B brackets. However, I'm especially proud of how they all rebounded and continued to get stronger with each match the last three days. It was a lot of matches and we competed very well. We had a lot of growth this weekend, as players and as a team, which is what the fall is all about. I think they're just starting to realize what they're capable of this Spring."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the A draw, sophomores Ellie Lake and Ginevra Muratori rebounded from a 2-1 opening loss to Middlebury to win the back draw.
- Lake and Muratori defeated Smith and Williams on Saturday, each by a 2-1 score, before beating Wellesley 2-1 in Sunday's back draw final.
- Against Wellesley, the duo lost the doubles point, and Lake trailed by a set and 4-3 in the second set. She rallied to take the set and won the deciding super tiebreaker 10-4.
- Both Skidmore B-draw entries—Coco Prokop/Samantha Jacobs/Kendall Olivas and Maggie English/Mia Rosenberg/Nandini Chandra—advanced to the back draw final.
- Rather than face their teammates, they played exhibition matches against other teams and shared the B back draw title.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Muratori finished 4-0 in singles playing in the A Draw and beat top players from Middlebury, Smith, Williams, and Wellesley.
- Chandra went 5-0 in singles and doubles in the B Draw, as the first year finished 3-0 in doubles beating teams from Trinity, Wellesley, and Emerson and 2-0 in singles beating players from Wellesley and Emerson. Â
- Rosenberg finished 3-0 in doubles alongside Chandra by beating teams from Trinity, Wellesley, and Emerson College.
