GENEVA, N.Y. – A solid start by the Skidmore College women's tennis team has five individuals competing in the round of 16, as play began in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional, held on the campus of William Smith College Saturday afternoon.
In addition,
Risa Fukushige and
Dea Koiava marched to the quarterfinal in doubles.
In singles, Fukushige, the top seed, made easy work of her opponents in the first two rounds, defeating Dina Rigas of William Smith 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round and Union's Paige Webster 6-4, 6-0 in the second round. She will face Vassar's Sarra Yekta, the fifth seed, in the round of 16.
Sofia Carlsson, seeded 10
th, outlasted William Smith's Maggie Bonomo in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 and swept Ithaca's Kathryn Shaffer 6-0, 6-0 to land in the round of 16, where she will face fourth-seeded Frances Cornwall of Vassar.

Lily Feldman all won their first two matchups to set up trips to the round of 16. Koiava defeated Christina Ryan of St. Lawrence 6-1, 6-0 and swept Leland Barclay of William Smith 6-0, 6-0 to set up a matchup with Katherine Luddy of TCNJ. SooHoo defeated RIT's Claire Casalnova 6-1, 6-2 and Grace Minassian of TCNJ 7-6, 6-0, setting up a matchup against NYU's Flyora Shiyanova. Feldman will face Caroline Reilly of St. Lawrence, after she swept Cami Ruiz Vega of Rochester 6-0, 6-0 and Ashley Fair of Vassar, 6-1, 6-0.
Jackie Ahn defeated Vassar's Morgane Flournoy 6-3, 7-5, before falling to Rochester's Camila Garcia 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.
In doubles, the top-seeded duo of Fukushige and Koiava had no trouble early on. They defeated Fair and Melina Stvropoulos of Vassar 8-1 in the opening round and swept Brianna Ruback and Sara Steinberg of Ithaca 8-0 in the second. They'll face TCNJ's Andrea Giacobbo and Minassian in the quarterfinal.
