SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team heads to Geneva, N.Y. for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Championships this Saturday-Monday.
The top Division III women's tennis players in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania will meet at William Smith College and compete for the singles and doubles titles. The tournament winners will advance to the ITA Oracle Cup Championships, held at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. for the second consecutive year.
The Thoroughbreds have five singles players and a pair of doubles teams seeded in this year's event. Sophomore
Risa Fukushige is the top seed. The reining Liberty League Player of the Year and ITA All-American is the 34
th-ranked singles player in the ITA rankings. Freshman
Dea Koiava, after coming off a solid debut at Williams last weekend, is seeded sixth. Fellow rookie
Lily Feldman is right behind as a seventh seed. Rounding things out is 10
th-seeded Sophia Carlsson and 15
th-seeded
Audrey SooHoo. Sophomore
Jackie Ahn will also look to make a deep run in the tournament after a solid early showing last season.
In doubles, Fukushige and Koiava are the top seed, while Feldman and SooHoo are ranked eighth. Ahn and Carlsson will also compete, with a chance to meet Fukushige and Koiava in the quarterfinal if things go well. Ahn and Carlsson will face NYU's tandem of Flyora Shiyanova and Coco Kulle, the fourth seed and defending doubles champions, in the opening round.
