FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The 21st ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team picked up its second straight victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 16 Mary Washington 6-3 in the final day of the UMW Blue-Grey Invitational, held at the UMW Indoor Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.

Skidmore (8-2) went a perfect 3-0 in the invitational, after defeating Swarthmore on Friday and No. 15 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. They will travel to Ithaca for their next contest, a Liberty League match on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m. Host Mary Washington (6-3) will next host Centre College and York (Pa.) at the UMW Indoor Courts on Saturday, March 24, beginning at noon.

The Thoroughbreds had to rally after dropping two of the three doubles matches to open the scoring. Alexa Goldberg and Jessica Ampel picked up a crucial point for Skidmore at No. 3, defeating Danielle Mirabella and Rachel Cooper by an 8-5 score.

Skidmore would shine in singles action, winning five of six matches to pull off the victory. Playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in her collegiate career, Risa Fukushige battled through a long three-set match against Rachel Summers, rallying from a dropped first set, eventually defeating Summers by the narrowest of margins, a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) score. Michelle Fuca, Laura Swenson, and Renee Karchere-Sun needed just two sets to earn the victory in their respective matches. Fuca would defeat Mirabella by a 6-4, 6-4 score at No. 4 and Swenson would pick up the 6-3, 6-4 victory over Addie Hinton at No. 5. Karchere-Sun survived a competitive first set, pulling off the 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory at No. 3 against Hannah Jabusch. Ada Wiggins rallied from dropping her first set at No. 2, defeating Caroline Mosberg by a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 score.
