GENEVA, N.Y. – The 20th ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team shut out William Smith in its spring opener, 9-0 in Liberty League action inside Bristol Field House Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore improves to 4-1 (4-0 Liberty League) this season, with all four of its victories coming against league opponents. The Thoroughbreds have won 55 of the last 56 matches in league play. William Smith falls to 2-1, and 1-1 in league action.
 
In doubles, Alexa Goldberg and Laura Swenson picked up a dominating 8-2 victory at the third spot. The teams of Michelle Fuca and Ada Wiggins (No. 1) and Renee Karchere-Sun and Risa Fukushige (No. 2) won by narrow margins to push the Thoroughbreds to a 3-0 lead entering singles play.
 
Fukushige swept her opponent at third singles, defeating Kate Foley 6-0, 6-0. Fuca also had a strong performance at No. 4 defeating Charlotte Engebrecht 6-0, 6-1. Swenson and Jackie Ahn saw great competition in their matches at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, but were able to pull out first set wins, eventually preserving the Skidmore shutout.

"It was a good spring opener for us," said head coach Curt Speerschneider. "William Smith is always feisty and we had to work for these matches.  We've been working a lot on match intelligence and toughness, which showed today."
 
The Thoroughbreds will host No. 32 Wellesley on March 3 at 2 p.m. on the Wenger Courts, weather permitting.
