MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team put up a dominant performance in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Elizabethtown College 5-0 Friday afternoon at the Proctor Tennis Courts on the campus of Middlebury College.
Skidmore, ranked 20th nationally, improves to 13-7 and will take on No. 12 Amherst in the NCAA Regional Semifinal on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Elizabethtown finishes the season with a 13-5 record.
Skidmore allowed just three points en route to a sweep in doubles play, all winning by 8-1 scores.
Madie Benn and
Michelle Fuca played at No. 1,
Ada Wiggins and
Brianna Greene competed at No. 2, and
Alexa Goldberg and
Jessica Ampel competed at third doubles.
The Thoroughbreds continued that momentum into singles action. Gianetti earned Skidmore's fourth point with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Lenea Riehl, and Greene clinched the match with a near-perfect 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 against Laura Gribble. Wiggins, Fuca,
Renee Karchere-Sun, and Benn all held dominant leads when the match was called.
