WILTON, N.Y. – The 28th-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team won its fourth straight contest, defeating 32nd-ranked NYU 7-2, at the Wilton YMCA Saturday afternoon.
 
The Thoroughbreds, ranked 28th in the recent Oracle/ITA Division III polls and eighth in the Northeast region, improve to 6-1 on the season. NYU, ranked 13th in the region, falls to 2-1.
 
The Thoroughbreds took two out of three doubles matches to grab the early lead. Madie Benn and Michelle Fuca fought a tough challenge against NYU's Fleura Shiyanova and Laila El Dessouki at the top slot, winning 8-5. The pair of Ada Wiggins and Brianna Greene picked up the other win at second doubles, defeating Alice McGinty and Vanessa Scott 8-4.
 
Skidmore dominated in singles action, winning five of six matches to pick up the victory. The top three spots went the way of the Thoroughbreds, as Wiggins (6-1, 6-3 over Shiyanova at first singles), Benn (6-1, 6-4 over McGinty at second singles), and Fuca (6-3, 6-1 over Vanessa Scott at third singles) holding serve in straight sets. After cruising in the first set, Danielle Giannetti fought through a grueling second set, but prevailed over Nikki Ong, winning 6-0, 7-5 at sixth singles. Renee Karchere-Sun fought through three sets at fourth singles, but prevailed over Judy Kam by a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 score.
 
"We knew this would be a dangerous match coming in," said Skidmore head coach Curt Speerschneider. "NYU is loaded with some good talent throughout the lineup.  We did a great job of playing the brand of tennis that we wanted.  It's always good to beat a good team like this, but know we've some things to work on so we'll continue to get stronger."
 
Skidmore will next host Williams College at the Wilton YMCA on Sunday, March 12 at 11 a.m. NYU next takes on St. Lawrence at Wellesley College on Friday.
