WILTON, N.Y. – The 28th-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team fell to No. 2 Williams in a matchup of the nation's best squads, by an 8-1 score at the Wilton YMCA Sunday afternoon.
 
Skidmore's four-game match streak comes to an end with the loss, the first at home, as the Thoroughbreds stand at 6-2. Williams, the No. 2 team in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III polls, stays perfect at 3-0.
 
The Thoroughbreds held the advantage in two of the three doubles matches. After falling at third doubles, the duo of Brianna Greene and Ada Wiggins dug deep in their second doubles match, defeating the duo of Sydney Myong and Linda Shin 8-6. At first doubles, the team of Madie Benn and Michelle Fuca fought valiantly but fell to Williams' Chloe Henderson and Hannah Atkinson by an 8-5 score.
 
Williams took that momentum into singles play, where the team won all six of its matches to complete the victory. Wiggins took her first set match against Leah Bush to three sets, but dropped the tiebreaking third set to finish 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5).
 
"We came out firing in doubles getting up in two of the three matches, but just couldn't maintain it," said Skidmore head coach Curt Speerschneider. "To beat a team like Williams we have to maintain a high level for however long it takes.  Despite the result, this was a good learning step to be ready for next weekend down in Virginia."
 
Both teams will head to Virginia to compete in a few matches. Skidmore will face host Mary Washington on Friday at 6 p.m., while Williams will face Washington and Lee at the campus of Mary Washington on Saturday, March 18.
