Skidmore remains perfect in league play

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The 27th-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep on Sunday, defeating RIT 9-0 in Liberty League action at the Mendon Racquet  and Pool Club.

The victory, combined with Saturday's 9-0 victory over William Smith, improves the Thoroughbreds to 5-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Liberty League play. RIT falls to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in league action.

In doubles play, Madie Benn and Ada Wiggins returned as a tandem for the first time in the spring semester, defeating RIT's Amelia Ying and Diana Kulavice 8-3 at first singles. Renee Karchere-Sun and Jessica Ampel won 8-1 in the second doubles slot and Alexa Goldberg and Jessica Tsai completed the singles sweep with an 8-0 shutout in the third slot.

The Thoroughbreds, ranked eighth in the Northeast region, had little trouble in singles play, giving up six points total in the six matches. Michelle Fuca shut out RIT's Brianna Dimisko 6-0, 6-0 at the second spot, while at the top spot, Wiggins completed a 4-0 weekend, defeating Ying, the 2016 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Karchere-Sun, Ampel, Goldberg, and Tsai completed the team shutout, giving up just one point each in their straight set victories.

"Everyone played solid all weekend," said Skidmore head coach Curt Speerschnieder. "Both of these teams are much improved from last year and we did a good job of focusing on our games to maintain our level of play in every match.  This was a good lead in to some challenging weekends coming up in March.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what this team is capable of in the next few weeks."

The Thoroughbreds will next host NYU on Saturday at the Wilton YMCA at 11 a.m. The Tigers will travel to face St. Lawrence in Canton on Saturday at 10 a.m.
