WILTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory in Liberty League action against William Smith, at the Wilton YMCA Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds, ranked eighth in the Northeast region and 27th in the latest ITA/Oracle Division III national rankings, improve to 4-1 overall, and a perfect 3-0 in Liberty League play. The Thoroughbreds have won 44 of the last 45 league matches. It was the first dual match of the season and the first action in the spring season for William Smith, ranked 20th regionally. They fall to 0-1.
Skidmore cruised through singles action on Saturday, with
Michelle Fuca,
Renee Karchere-Sun,
Brianna Greene, and
Danielle Giannetti shutting out their opponents.
Ada Wiggins defeated Hannah More in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at the top singles slot, while
Madie Benn hung tough to survive a strong challenge by Allie Perron at the second slot, picking up the 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) straight set victory.
In doubles action, the team of Giannetti and
Jessica Ampel swept William Smith's Sydney Ferry and Alex Greenberg 8-0 at the third spot, while the teams of Benn and Fuca and Wiggins and Greene each picked up 8-4 victories at first and second doubles, respectively.
The Thoroughbreds will face RIT in league action in Rochester on Sunday at 1 p.m., while William Smith hosts Vassar in league action next Saturday at noon.
