LATHAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team returned to action in a big way, shutting out Rensselaer at the Tri-City Fitness facility on Sunday.
The Thoroughbreds, ranked 27th in the latest ITA Division III polls, and eighth in the Northeast Region, improve to 3-1 overall, and a perfect 3-0 in league action. Skidmore has won 43 of the last 44 league contests. The Engineers, who are ranked 19th in the region, fall to 2-1 overall and drop their first league match.
Skidmore won all three doubles matches with the third pairing being the closest.
Danielle Giannetti and
Jessica Ampel survived a strong challenge from Nisha Rajamohan and Mailani Neal, winning 8-6 to head into singles action.
The Thoroughbreds breezed through singles action, winning every match in straight sets.
Ada Wiggins and
Madie Benn gave up one game in their straight set victories at the top two spots, and
Michelle Fuca gave up just two games in her 6-0, 6-2 victory over Tess Lubin.
Renee Karchere-Sun battled through the first set of her fourth singles match, but eventually prevailed over Rajamohan, 6-3, 6-0.
Brianna Greene had the closest match for the Thoroughbreds at the fifth slot, but was able to pick up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Neal. Giannetti shut out Andrea Valencia in straight sets to preserve the shutout.
Skidmore returns home next Sunday when it hosts William Smith at the Wilton YMCA at 1 p.m. RPI will host the University of Rochester on Sunday at 11 a.m.
