Field hockey tops RPI, 5-2

Box Score TROY, N.Y. -- Dani DeGregory and Sam Skott both scored two goals to lead the third-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team to a 5-2 win against RPI in the Liberty League opener for both teams at Harkness Field on Saturday afternoon.

Rensselaer drops to 1-4 overall, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 6-0.

The first half saw six goals scored between the two teams. Skidmore got on the board first, just over three minutes into play, as Krista Lamoreaux blasted a shot into the near corner of the cage. RPI answered at 14:58 on a penalty corner, as Angela Cascio's pass picked out Colleen Fowler, who nailed the ball into the back of the cage.

The Thoroughbreds then scored back-to-back goals within a six-minute span. DeGregory notched her first goal of the day at 22:16 with a breakway. Lamoreaux then assisted Skott at 28:35, driving the ball into the circle where Skott was waiting with a tip-in.

Megan Jones provided a response for the Engineers just before halftime, poking home a shot after a scramble in front of the Skidmore goal. The Thoroughbreds would get the final say in the first half, as DeGregory struck for her second tally, firing a shot through traffic to give Skidmore a 4-2 advantage at the break.

Skidmore controlled most of the play in the second half, with Skott scoring the only goal of the period in the 58th minute. Sam Revera tipped the ball towards the cage on a penalty corner and Skott provided the final touch to make it 5-2.

The Thoroughbreds outshot Rensselaer, 36-9, and held a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners. Amy Beck made four saves in goal for Skidmore, while Hannah Clough recorded a season-high 18 saves for RPI.

The Thoroughbreds travel to Utica College Sunday, Sept. 21 for a 2 p.m. contest.
