Blake hat trick highlights Skidmore’s 9-3 Liberty League-opening win over St. Lawrence

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – First-year Izzy Blake scored her first collegiate hat trick as the Skidmore College field hockey team erupted for a season-high nine goals in a 9-3 Liberty League-opening victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park. The Thoroughbreds improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.
  • Skidmore has scored at least six goals in all four of its wins – averaging 7.75 goals per game in those four contests.
  • Two other players scored twice for the Thoroughbreds. Molly Van Vranken scored her fifth and sixth tallies of the year and added an assist. Colby Paul also scored twice for her fifth and sixth of the campaign. Catie O'Rourke assisted on three Skidmore goals.
  • Skidmore jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than eight minutes in. Erin Ohlenbusch opened the scoring at 3:43 with a blast from the top off a penalty corner from Ella Costa. Vranken doubled the advantage at 7:25, finishing a feed through traffic from O'Rourke.
  • St. Lawrence (4-4, 0-1 Liberty) cut the deficit in half 1:42 into the second quarter on a Lily Gubbins goal.
  • Van Vranken answered at 21:37, knocking in a rebound for her second of the afternoon and sixth of the season. O'Rourke picked up her second assist of the game.
  • Emma Houff made it 4-1 less than two minutes later, collecting a loose rebound for her third goal of the year.
  • Charlotte Lehr scored off a St. Lawrence penalty corner at 26:16 before Blake delivered her first of the day with 11 seconds remaining in the half. Van Vranken supplied the assist to send Skidmore into the break ahead 5-2.
  • The Saints pulled within two on Hannah Gubbins' eighth goal of the season just two minutes into the third quarter.
  • Paul responded with two goals over the next 7:00. O'Rourke set up the first at 34:41 before Auriel Gonzalez assisted Paul's second at 41:40. Paul and Van Vranken are tied for the team lead with six goals apiece.
  • Blake put the game away with two goals 61 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter. She chipped in her second at 47:23 before completing the hat trick at 48:24 off an assist from Madeleine Tucker.
  • Blake's six points were a Skidmore single-game season high. O'Rourke finished with three assists, matching the team's season high.
  • Costa's first-quarter assist gave her a team-leading six assists and 16 points on the season.
  • Skidmore established season highs with nine goals, 34 shots, 20 shots on goal and 17 penalty corners. The Thoroughbreds held advantages of 34-17 in shots, 20-9 in in shots on goal and 17-5 in corners.
  • Nicole Sylvestri made two saves over the opening 30 minutes to earn the win. Lily Dreyfuss stopped four shots in 26:11 of relief, while Allison Morgan played the final 3:49.
  • The Thoroughbreds have won three straight, scoring 23 goals over the stretch.

Skidmore will visit Hartwick on Wednesday, Sept. 30 before hosting Union on Friday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. as a part of Homecoming Weekend.
