Skott paces field hockey to fifth straight win

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Senior forward Sam Skott tied program-highs with five goals and 10 points to lead the fourth-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team to a 7-1 non-conference win against Babson College, Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park.
 
Skott becomes the fifth player in school history with five goals in a game and the sixth with 10 points in a game. 
 
Skott put the Thoroughbreds (5-0) ahead 3:29 into the contest, tucking in a rebound from close range and Dani DeGregory doubled the Skidmore lead 17 minutes later with a blast from the top of the circle. Skott completed her hat trick in the first half, banging home a loose ball in the 27th minute and burying a feed from DeGregory four minutes later.
 
Skott extended the Thoroughbreds lead 1:18 into the second half, as she collected a long pass from Krista Lamoreaux and drove in a shot from eight yards. DeGregory netted her second goal of the game 2:34 later, going coast-to-coast before ripping a shot from the top of the circle just inside the left post. DeGregory and Skott combined again in the 47th minute for Skidmore's seventh goal to seal the win.
 
Elise Towers scored the Beavers (3-3) lone goal from a penalty corner, converting on a rebound after a Jenn Hanks made a defensive save to deny Caroline Malone.
 
Amy Beck made six saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds for her fifth win of the season, while Kayla Costa turned away six shots in goal for Babson. Skidmore owned a 28-11 advantage in shots and a 14-8 edge in penalty corners.
  
The Thoroughbreds, who have outscored opponents 23-1 in the first half this season, open Liberty League play at RPI at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
