Skidmore to defend Liberty League Women's Tennis title

CANTON, N.Y. (Liberty League)--Liberty League women's tennis teams will face off against one another this weekend at Sammis Tennis Courts on the campus of St. Lawrence for a shot at the Liberty League Championship and NCAA Tournament automatic bid.

The eight-team tournament begins with quarterfinal action starting Saturday, April 26, at 9 a.m. with No. 1 seed Skidmore against No. 8 seed Bard.

Three-time defending champion and top seed Skidmore, 14-3 overall, 5-0 in Liberty League, enters the tournament on a three-match winning streak. The Thoroughbreds, currently ranked No. 14 in Division III according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, as all three of its losses came by way of teams ranked in the ITA top 15. In addition, Skidmore is ranked by ITA as the No. 6 team in the Northeast Region.

Senior Lee Ford leads Skidmore as she currently places as the No. 13 ranked singles player in the Northeast region. Ford, the three-time Liberty League Performer of the Week, was named an All-League selection in singles in 2012-13. Ford and Skidmore freshman Madeline Benn also comprise the third-ranked doubles team in the Northeast Region. Benn has been another consistent performer for Skidmore all season as the freshman has been named Liberty League Rookie of the week a total of five times.

Vassar, enters the tournament at No. 29 in the ITA national rankings, and No. 11 in the ITA Northeast Region rankings. The Brewers earned the No. 2 seed in the league tournament after going 11-5, and 4-1 in league play. The Brewers, having dropped their last match to No. 13 MIT on April 19, look to contend for the team title after falling in the championship match to the Thoroughbreds last season. The doubles team of Samantha Schapiro and Shayna Becker currently ranks No. 14 in the region according to ITA. The Brewers will match-up against No. 7 seed RIT in a quarterfinal beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

St. Lawrence is the No. 3 seed after finishing the regular season 15-3 and 3-2 in the Liberty League. The Saints enter the tournament as the No. 13 ranked team in the Northeast Region having dropped two of three matches in the league to the top two seeds Skidmore and Vassar. The tandem of Morgan McNeal and Elkie Vandenbeemt currently rank as the No. 12 doubles team in the Northeast Region. St. Lawrence will face No. 6 seed Union in its quarterfinal at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

RPI, comes into the tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Engineers also find themselves ranked in the last ITA Northeast Regional rankings, coming in at No. 16. RPI will face No. 5 seed William Smith which is currently just one spot behind RPI at the No. 17 team in the region. RPI and William Smith will begin their quarterfinal match-up at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

All matches will be played to decision. Once a team wins a total of five individual matches - either singles or doubles - the match will conclude. In the event of inclement weather, matches will be held inside in St. Lawrence's Newell Field House.
