Women's tennis cruises against St. Lawrence

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The 20th-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team swept singles play against St. Lawrence University, en route to an 8-1 Liberty League win, Sunday afternoon at the Wilton YMCA.

The Thoroughbreds, who snapped a two-match losing skid, improve to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.

Melissa Hirsch and Madeline Benn got Skidmore on the board with an 8-5 win at number two doubles, and Yumi Karlshoej and Monique Carlson put the Thoroughbreds in front with a 9-7 win at number three doubles.

Hirsch notched her second win of the day at number one singles, battling to a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win against Elkie Vandenbeemt, Madeline Benn cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at number three singles and Monqiue Carlson knocked off Georgia Comber at number four singles, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4).

"The team did a great job after a slow start in doubles," said Skidmore head coach Curt Speerschneider. "We were fortunate to come out of doubles up 2-1, but we did a great job of taking control of the match in singles. "This was a good win to go into two very tough weekends we have coming up."

The Thoroughbreds compete at the Blue/Grey Invitational in Frederiscksburg, Virg. March 28-30, opening play against the University of Mary Washington.
