Thoroughbreds win in OT

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Kelly Blackhurst scored in overtime to give the Skidmore College field hockey team a 3-2 win over Babson College, Sunday afternoon.

Skidmore, ranked 15th nationally, has won four straight to improve to 5-1. The Beavers are 2-3.

Blackhurst's ninth tally of the season capped a fast-paced affair that featured plenty of scoring chances for both teams throughout the second half and the overtime period.

Following a Babson penalty corner, Skidmore's all-time leading scorer gathered a loose ball at midfield and broke in on goal before losing the ball in a collision with Beavers' senior goalkeeper Kayla Florence. Blackhurst was able to collect the ball just outside the right post and slide a shot past a diving Florence for the score.

Babson opened the scoring at the 12:51 mark of the first half, fighting off a flurry of Skidmore penalty corners to get a goal on the counter attack.

Skidmore pulled even when sophomore Alex Hagney (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season at the 20:19 mark. Hagney took a centering pass from junior Sam Skott (Buskirk, N.Y.) and despite being denied  on her initial shot, was able to jam home the rebound at the right post. The Beavers wasted little time re-taking the lead, though, as Caroline Malone  tipped home a rebound with 8:11 left in the opening half to give the Green and White a 2-1 lead.

After pressing for the equalizer over the final minutes of the first half, the Thoroughbreds were able to tie the game at 2-2 just 76 seconds into the second half. Skott had her shot from close range saved but sophomore Dani DeGregory (Greenwich, N.Y.) poked home the rebound for her fourth goal of the season.

Both teams had opportunities to take the lead over the final 33:48 of regulation but Florence and McDougal took turns making big saves. Lockwood and Malone both were denied on open shots in the opening 15 minutes of the second half while Florence made a diving save on a blast from Blackhurst with 1:57 left in regulation and DeGregory broke loose inside the circle before having the ball taken off her stick just in front of the cage with under a minute to go in the half.

Each team also had three shots in overtime as Florence made a pair of saves over the first four minutes of the extra session and McDougall made back-to-back saves on sophomore Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass.) and McDougle just prior to the Blackhurst goal.

Florence finished the day with 12 saves for Babson while McDougall made nine stops for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds outshot the Beavers 24-16 and also piled up 18 penalty corners on the day.

"Skidmore battled from behind again and triumphed  in overtime," said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck.  "The victory was a team effort with great contributions from several different players.

"Jenn Hanks was outstanding on defense, Krista Lamoreaux dominated the midfield, and Blackhurst, DeGregory and Hagney all had valuable contributions on attack.  Pauline Searles made the key play in overtime, stealing the ball in the defensive end, carrying it forward and slipping a pass to Blackhurst who was able to convert.
