Field hockey cruises to 7-1 win over St. Lawrence

Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team scored early and often as they earned a 7-1 victory over St. Lawrence in Saturday's Liberty League matchup at Wagner Park.
 
With the win the Thoroughbreds improve to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in league play, moving into a three-way tie for second place in the Liberty League.  The Saints fall to 2-12 overall and 1-5 league.
 
Skidmore got the scoring started early as junior Kelly Blackhurst put home a Dani DeGregory pass just 29 seconds into the game for her 23rd goal of the season.  St. Lawrence answered back just five minutes later when Courtney Cartier redirected a Kate Higgins pass to tie it up at 1-1.
 
At 8:21 the Thoroughbreds took the lead back for good as Pauline Searles blasted a shot from the wing to make it 2-1 and put Skidmore up two goals when she redirected a shot for her third goal of the season.  Kelly Blackhurst assisted on both goals from Searles.
 
Melanie Webb made it 4-1 with her first goal of the year, a redirection on a shot from Sam Skott at 24:54.  DeGregory closed out the first half scoring as she redirected a shot from Jenn Hanks to give Skidmore a 5-1 lead at the break.
 
The Thoroughbreds opened the second half scoring quickly as Ceilidh MacNeill redirected Molly Gile's shot from the wing for her eighth of the season.  DeGregory capped the scoring at 42:36 as she took a pass from Blackhurst and put it home for her second of the game and ninth of the year.
 
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage over the final 28 minutes as Skidmore closed out Liberty League play with a 7-1 home victory.
 
Haley McDougall earned the win, playing the opening 46:27 in goal, while Amy Beck played 14:55 and Allie Sosinsky closed out the game, playing the final 8:38.  Sosinsky finished with five saves down the stretch.  Nicole Matos took the loss for the Saints as she made 15 saves.
 
Eight different players recorded a point for the Thoroughbreds led by two goals and an assist from DeGregory, one goal and three assists from Blackhurst and two goals from Searles. 
 
Skidmore outshot St. Lawrence 34-8 and held a 19-2 advantage in penalty corners.
 
The 14th-ranked Thoroughbreds have clinched a spot in the Liberty League tournament and will await their seeding.
 
Skidmore hosts Hartwick Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
