Thoroughbreds win big at Wheaton, 7-2

Box Score Rehoboth, Mass. – Six different players recorded a point as the Skidmore College field hockey team cruised to a 7-2 win over Wheaton (MA) Saturday afternoon at Faxon Field.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 10-4, while the Lyons fall to 2-10.
 
Skidmore got the scoring started early as Kelly Blackhurst scored on a penalty stroke 38 seconds into the game and she made it 2-0 with her second of the game and 22nd of the season at 3:54.  Freshman Dani DeGregory put the Thoroughbreds up 3-0 at 16:13 as she found the back of the cage off a pass from Melanie Webb.  DeGregory capped the first half scoring with her second of the game at 23:12 as Skidmore held a 4-0 advantage at the break.
 
The Thoroughbreds came out just as strong in the second half as Ceilidh MacNeill sent a pass across the circle that Sam Skott tipped home to make it 5-0.  MacNeill assisted on the next goal as well, setting up freshman Jenn Hanks for her first collegiate goal at 40:57.  DeGregory finished off her hat trick at 45:25, tallying her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Hanks to give Skidmore a 7-0 lead.
 
Wheaton was able to tack on a pair of goals late as Tracy McCann and Gillian Mann each scored, but that's all they would get as the Thoroughbreds picked up the 7-2 win.
 
In addition to DeGregory's three goals, Blackhurst added a pair and has posted a point in all 14 games this season.  Hanks finished with a goal and an assist and MacNeill chipped in with a pair of helpers.
 
Haley McDougall earned the win in goal, making five saves in the first 27:24 for Skidmore.  Amy Beck relieved McDougall, playing 18:01 and Allie Sosinsky closed out the game, playing the final 24:35.
 
For the Lyons, Ellie Massengill made 12 saves in the first 45:25, while Madison Wolters turned away three shots in the final 24:35.  Alex Smith added a defensive save for Wheaton.
 
The Thoroughbreds outshot Wheaton 33-8 and held a 15-13 advantage in penalty corners.
 
Skidmore returns to action on Oct. 20 when they host St. Lawrence in their final Liberty League game of the regular season.
