Thoroughbreds upend Vassar for Liberty League Tennis title

Geneva, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women's tennis team upset eight-time Liberty League champion Vassar College 6-3 to win the Liberty League Women's Tennis Championship, Sunday at William Smith College.

The win avenges a 6-3 loss to the Brewers in the 2010 championship match.  Skidmore has now won seven league titles, but this was the first since 2000.

Skidmore ranked 29th nationally and 11th in the Northeast, led 2-1 after doubles and then won four of six singles matches to improve to 10-8.  Vassar, ranked 25th natinonally and 9th in the region falls to 14-7.

Rachel Loeb continued her outstanding play with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Jennifer Beckerman at number one singles. Molly Nolan had a key three-set win at number six singles 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at number six singles and teammed with Melissa Hirsch for a dominating 8-2 win at number three doubles.

Skidmore will now await a possible NCAA bid when the field is announced on Monday.
