Rochester, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team battled back on Sunday afternoon to earn a 5-4 victory at Rochester.
Skidmore got out to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches; including
Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.) and
Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) teaming up to win 8-6 at number one doubles over Weiner and Tseng, the #2 ranked doubles team in the Northeast Region.
Rochester came out strong, winning the first four singles matches to take a 4-3 lead before freshman
Brittany Trimble (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) defeated Deniella Shreck 6-2, 6-2 to make it a tie match.
Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) won the deciding match 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) to give the Thoroughbreds a 5-4 victory. Engros battled back after trailing 0-4 in the final set and won the tiebreaker.
“This was a very competitive match on both sides” head coach
Curt Speerschneider said. “We came out very strong in doubles and played big points. Rochester came out a bit stronger in singles, but the bottom of our lineup prevailed under a lot of pressure which was great. Tory played particularly strong and stuck to a confident aggressive game to clinch it for us. It was a team effort for sure.”
Skidmore will take on Washington and Lee in Fredricksburg, Va. on March 26 as part of the Fab Five Tournament at University of Mary Washington.
