Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The 7th-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team won its third consecutive Liberty League Championship with a 4-1 win over #14 Hamilton, Saturday afternoon at Thoroughbred Field.

Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) led the way for the Thoroughbreds, scoring two goals and assisting on two others on her way to being named Tournament MVP. Kemp now has 71 points on the season, break the previous record of 69 and tied a single-season record for assists with 21. Skidmore has won 17 straight games, improving to 18-1 overall, posting a perfect 12-0 record at home and tying a program with 18 victories. The Continentals fall to 13-3 on the season.

Kemp opened up the scoring at the 5:26 mark when she redirected a shot off the stick of Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) that beat Hamilton keeper Molly Brooks for a 1-0 Skidmore lead. The Thoroughbreds came close to taking a 2-0 lead late in the first half after Kemp got in on the goal alone but Marisa Spagnolo made a defensive save to keep the deficit to one at the end of the half.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Skidmore went up 2-0 after Kemp sent a pass across the circle the junior Jess Dankner (Westborough, Mass.)  hammered home in front of the net. At the 53:14 mark, Kemp made a few moves on the defender and blasted a shot from the top of the circle that beat the keeper for her 25th goal of the season and gave the Thoroughbreds a 3-0 lead.

The Continentals came alive for a bit after that as Colleen Callaghan's shot hit off the post a few minutes later and then Nikki Haskins got Hamilton on the board, putting home a rebound in front of the net for her 10th of the season, making it a 3-1 game.

But less than a minute later, Skidmore responded as Rosencrans took a feed from Kemp to cap off the scoring and make it 4-1.

Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) finished with five saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds, while Brooks stopped seven for the Continentals.

Skidmore outshot Hamilton, 18-10 and held an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Kemp along with Catinella, Rosencrans, Claire Superak (Carrboro, N.C.), Julia Sarni (Concord, Mass.) and Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) were named to the 2010 Liberty League Field Hockey All-Tournament Team.

The NCAA Tournament field will be announced, Monday morning at 9 a.m. This is the fourth straight appearance and 10th overall.
