Record-breaking season comes to end for Thoroughbreds

Newport News, Va. – The Skidmore College field hockey team's dream season came to an end with Saturday's 5-0 NCAA Semifinal loss to Bowdoin at Captains Field on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

The Thoroughbreds finish the season with a 20-2 record, ending their program-record 19-game winning streak. The Polar Bears improve to 19-1 and will take on Messiah in the Division III Championship, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Cathleen Smith got Bowdoin on the board first as Katie Herter corralled a rebound off a Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) save and sent the ball to the near post where Smith redirected it in for her 11th goal of the season. Skidmore's best opportunity in the first half came at 22:27, when Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) blasted a shot from the wing off a penalty corner that Emily Neilson turned away.

Despite trailing 1-0 at half, the Thoroughbreds controlled the first half offensively outshooting Bowdoin 9-5 and forcing 11 corners to just four for Bowdoin.

The early goal proved to be all the Polar Bears would add four goals in the second half with two coming from Herter, one from King and Smith added another goal. Smith finished the game with two goals and three assists.

Catinella finished with 10 saves for Skidmore and Neilson made nine saves for Bowdoin.

Bowdoin outshot the Thoroughbreds, 18-12, while Skidmore held a 16-10 advantage in penalty corners.

During the 2010 season, Skidmore set program records for wins (20), winning streak (19) and winning percentage (.909) along with numerous individual records.

The Thoroughbreds will graduate nine seniors in the spring. They finish their Skidmore careers with a 66-16 record, including four NCAA Tournament appearances and three Liberty League Championships.
