Salem, Mass.-- Freshman goalie Colin Bessey stopped 41 shots to lead the Skidmore College men's hockey team to a 4-3 win over third seed Salem State in the Eastern College Athletic Conference quarterfinals Saturday.
The Thoroughbreds are headed to the ECAC East semifinals for the first time since moving to the conference in 1998. Skidmore will play Babson College on Friday in a semifinal at New England College. UMASS Boston will play New England in the other semifinal. Three of the top four seeds lost in the quarterfinals.
Freshman forward Tyler Doremus scored the game winner for the Thoroughbreds (13-9-3). Beesey, who stopped 40 shots during Skidmore's 2-2 regular season contest against the Vikings (14-9-3) earlier this month at Rockett Arena, turned aside 22 third period shots on his way to making 41 for the afternoon.
Brett Bandazian and Doremus paced the Skidmore attack. Bandazian tallied a pair of goals while Doremus scored the game-winner at 15:57 of the third period after helping set up the Thoroughbreds' second and third scoring strikes.
