Skidmore drops SUNYAC Semifinal, 6-3, at No. 14 Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team lost to 14th-ranked Oswego State, 6-3, on Saturday night in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena & Convocation Center.
  • Oswego (19-6-2) built a 3-0 lead in the first period and never let the Thoroughbreds get going as it advances to the conference title game for the second season in a row.
  • Skidmore finishes its debut SUNYAC season at 15-10-2 overall with its fifth consecutive semifinal appearance under its belt.
  • Oswego grabbed the commanding lead with three goals in just under three and a half minutes in the middle of the first period.
  • Justin Ryan had two goals and an assist for the Lakers, while Colin Vassallo assisted three times, and Jesse Horacek registered a pair of helpers.
  • Brandon Spaulding and senior captain Oscar Worob both had a goal and an assist for the Thoroughbreds. Tommy Aitken finished with 35 saves.
  • After a neutral-zone turnover led to a Laker chance, Jonathan Balah cashed on a loose puck at 12:33 of the first to make it 1-0.
  • Then, at 14:11, Michael Urgo tipped in a Travis Baker shot from the point to make it 2-0.
  • Adam Grenier made it 3-0 1:46 later when he got alone in the slot shortly after a Thoroughbred turnover near the blue line.
  • Spaulding got Skidmore on the board with under a minute remaining in the opening period on a nifty move to the forehand and wrist shot off the crossbar and in. Worob and Bryson Russell assisted.
  • The hosts spent a majority of the second period on the attack, but Skidmore did a good job limiting the Lakers to 10 shots and just one goal despite long stays in the offensive zone and near constant pressure.
  • Ryan scored Oswego's fourth goal on a bullet pass from Vassallo to the back post.
  • Shane Baker and Russell had Skidmore's best scoring chances in the period. Baker's shot from point blank on the power play hit the crossbar, and Russell's later wraparound try got stopped by the toe of Oswego goalie Michael Manzi.
  • Manzi stopped 20 on the night.
  • In the third, Worob cut the deficit to two with 8:37 left on a short-angle stuff. Cooper Rice and Spaulding assisted on the faceoff play.
  • Oswego got it back 2:17 later on a Brandon Cohen wrister.
  • Mitchell Floccare found the back of the net from the point to again make it a two-goal game with 4:13 remaining, but Ryan scored his second from long range into the empty net to complete the scoring. Christian Day and Bryce Terry had the assists on the Floccare goal.
  • Special teams weren't a major factor as Skidmore went 0-for-2 on the power play and Oswego 0-for-1.
  • Oswego will travel to No. 1 Hobart next Saturday, March 7 to play for the title. The Statesmen won their 67th consecutive home game, 4-0, over Cortland on Saturday night in the other semifinal.
