Thoroughbred field hockey advances to Liberty League championship game

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team advanced to the Liberty League Championship game Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Union College at St. Lawrence's North Country Field.

The victory is the ninth in a row for the Thoroughbreds, who improve to 14-3 on the season. Union ends their season at 14-4. Skidmore moves on to face St. Lawrence (12-5) in the championship match.

Liberty League Player of the Year Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored her 16th goal of the season and Skidmore's first goal of the day 7:44 into the first half. A corner from junior Casey Tang (Columbia, Md.) was passed from the top of the circle to senior Anne Murphy (San Francisco, Calif.), whose shot was redirected into the goal by Kemp to put the Thoroughbreds up by one.

Junior Sheray Michel (Schuylerville, N.Y.) gave Skidmore a 2-0 cushion late in the second half at 59:22. After a Union corner, sophomore Katie Potter (Rumson, N.J.) drove down the right side of the field and pushed it into the circle to Kemp. Kemp then tipped it to Michel, who slammed it home from the left side of the goal for her second goal of the season.

"Today's win was a true team effort.  The defense handled a tough and pesky Union offense, while the our offense used skill, speed, desire and heart to get the job done.  We also got quality play off the bench from several players," said head coach Beth Hallenbeck.

Union charged early in the second half, recording six corners during the span, but a tough Skidmore defense allowed just three shots in the period. Skidmore held a 14-5 shot advantage in the contest.

Skidmore sophomore net-minder Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) gained the tenth team shutout of the season with three saves on the day. Dutchwomen goalie Liz Stanford finished with three saves in the loss.
