Skidmore men's soccer ties New Paltz, 1-1

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team used a goal by freshman Pat Wildes (Hamden, Conn.) to tie the SUNY New Paltz Hawks, 1-1, in its last game of the season on Senior Day at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds finish at 10-6-3 for the year. New Paltz moves to 7-8-4.

New Paltz went ahead at 42:06 when a shot by freshman Evan Martel (West Sayville, N.Y.) was saved by Skidmore keeper Chris Ford (Ann Arbor, Mich.). When the ball slipped away from Ford, Hawk sophomore Joe Rose (Seaford, N.Y.) picked it up and scored an open-net goal for the 1-0 advantage.

Skidmore retaliated 2:30 later to tie the score at one. Freshman Matt Wolff (Minneapolis, Minn.) drove down the right side of the baseline and beat two defenders for a shot from inside the box. Wolff's shot missed and went straight to classmate Wildes, who poked it in the left side of the goal for his second goal of the season.

The overtime periods proved to be indecisive as neither team could put the ball in the net. New Paltz came close in the first overtime period when a shot by freshman Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y.) was headed for the top shelf before an elongated Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) pushed it over the crossbar for the save.

In the second overtime period, junior Ernie Economides (Bournedale, Mass.) was served a good pass and had an open shot at the goal, but the shot went just high with 1:49 left to play.

Skidmore starter Ford had three saves in 45:00 in the first half, while Peterson picked up three saves in 65:00. Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, N.Y.) played solid in the net for the Hawks, picking up 14 saves.
