CANTON, NY – The Skidmore College men's soccer team fell 2-0 at No. 6 St. Lawrence in its Liberty League opener Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (2-4-2, 0-1 Liberty League) held the Saints (7-0-1, 2-0 Liberty League) scoreless through the first half, but it was all St. Lawrence in the second half as the home team outshot Skidmore, 12-4, and scored in the 63rd and 89th minutes to secure the shutout win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded shots in the opening minutes, with first-years Matias Sampedro and Luke Dougherty placing shots on goal in the fourth and 14th minutes, while junior goalkeeper Rowan McLear made saves on a pair of Saints shots in the second and fifth minutes.
- Senior Colin Goodhines tested the St. Lawrence goalkeeper with a shot toward the bottom left corner in the 29th minute.
- Coming out of halftime, St. Lawrence took five shots in the first six minutes, but two McLear saves kept the game scoreless.
- The Saints broke through in the 63rd minute when Dennis Argueta scored on the rebound after McLear saved Nicholas Petrone's initial shot. Petrone was credited with the assist.
- L. Dougherty registered Skidmore's lone shot on goal of the second half in the 74th minute, sending an attempt toward the bottom center of the net.
- Petrone scored off a pass from Grant Gilmer in the 89th minute to make it 2-0, and sealing the game.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- L. Dougherty led Skidmore with four shots, including two on goal.
- McLear finished with six saves.
