Oneonta rallies past Thoroughbreds in second half

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College men's soccer team struck first but could not hold off a second-half surge from SUNY Oneonta in a 2-1 loss at Wachenheim Field on Tuesday evening.

The Thoroughbreds (2-3-2) entered halftime ahead after senior Colin Goodhines converted a penalty kick following an Oneonta handball inside the box. However, the unbeaten Red Dragons (6-0-1) responded by outshooting Skidmore 12-6 in the second half and capitalizing on the relentless pressure by scoring twice within an eight-minute span to complete the comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Quinn McInerney threatened to open the scoring in the 19th minute, firing a shot on goal that Oneonta goalkeeper James Cintron turned aside to force a corner kick.
  • Following an Oneonta handball inside the box on a cross from junior Gavin Wheeler, Skidmore took the lead in the 22nd minute when Goodhines converted the ensuing penalty kick into the lower-left corner.
  • Goodhines nearly doubled Skidmore's advantage in the 48th minute, but his free kick from just outside the box was turned away by a leaping save from the Oneonta goalkeeper.
  • On the ensuing counterattack, the Red Dragons tied the game in the 49th minute when a passing sequence between Jack Bochenski and Milton Mancias Magana set up Iyare Harris for the equalizer.
  • Junior Rowan McLear came through with a pair of crucial saves after aggressive plays on the ball in the 50th and 55th minutes when Oneonta broke through the Skidmore back line, keeping the game tied.
  • Unrelenting, the Red Dragons offense finally broke through again in the 57th minute when Mancias Magana connected with Bochenski for the eventual game-winning goal.
  • McLear recorded three additional saves down the stretch to keep Skidmore within striking distance, but the Thoroughbreds offense were unable to even the score.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Goodhines scored his 19th career goal and finished with a game-high three shots on goal.
  • McLear finished with six saves at goal.
