Goodhines delivers brace in shootout win over Brandeis

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A two-goal performance from senior Colin Goodhines propelled the Skidmore College men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brandeis at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (2-2-2) built an early 2-0 advantage behind goals from sophomore Simon Failla and Goodhines, before the Judges (2-3-2) responded with scores in the 39th and 57th minutes to draw level. Goodhines restored Skidmore's lead in the 66th minute, which proved to be the winner as the Thoroughbreds held off a late Brandeis push to secure the victory.

Junior Rowan McLear made three saves in goal, including a game-clinching stop in the final seconds, to earn his fourth career victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a sharp passing sequence that began with freshman Matias Sampedro playing a touch pass to Goodhines, who found Failla for a finish into the lower-right corner.
  • Skidmore doubled its lead following a corner kick in the 26th minute, after first year Nathan Gritzmacher rose above a crowd of Brandeis defenders and headed the ball toward goal, where Goodhines redirected it into the net.
  • Brandeis cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 39th minute when Langston Byrd finished a headed pass from Jack Rossiter.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Judges drew level in the 57th minute after a Skidmore foul inside the box resulted in a penalty kick, which Maddox Yu converted to level at 2-2.
  • Skidmore reclaimed the lead in the 66th minute when sophomore Quinn McInerney found Goodhines making an open run through the middle, who then used a shot fake to disorient the goalkeeper before finishing into the center of the net for the game-winner.
  • In the closing seconds, Brandeis generated one final chance off a corner kick, but McLear made a leaping save to preserve the victory.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Goodhines recorded two goals and one assist for the third brace of his career, and increases his career total to 18 goals.
  • Failla scored his first career goal.
  • Sampedro's assist is the first of his career.
  • Gritzmacher's assist marks the first of his career.
  • McInerney's assist is his first on the season and second of his career.
