Skidmore field hockey completes weekend sweep with 2-0 win

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.--  Sophomore Christine Kemp scored (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored two goals to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 2-0 win over William Smith College in a Liberty League match-up of nationally ranked teams, Saturday at Thoroughbred Field.

The 20th ranked Thoroughbreds are tied with St. Lawrence for first with a 4-1 league mark and 8-3 overall record with two league games to play.  The 16th ranked Herons fall to 8-4 and 2-3.

Skidmore grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Kemp, redirected a Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) shot past Heron goalie Chelsea Snyder (Cortland, N.Y.) at 9:49. 

The teams traded scoring chances for the rest of the half.  William Smith's Emily Atwan (Milton, Mass.) had a breakaway with 4:02 to play in the half, but Thoroughbred goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) came out and stuffed Atwan's shot to leave it 1-0 at the half.

The Herons challenged in the second half, but Catinella continued to come-up big.  She stopped a hard shot 3:30 into the half and then calmly swept the rebound off to the corner to prevent a second chance.

Kemp's second goal came at 41:30 when she took the ball down the left sideline from the midfield through several William Smith defenders and scored from right in front of the Heron net to make it 2-0.

Led by Catinella, Skidmore's defense withstood a late William Smith rally included six Heron shots on net in the game's final 15 minutes. Catinella finished with 10 saves, eight in the second half.  Snyder had seven saves for William Smith.

Shots were even at 13, but  the Herons held an 11-6 second half advantage.  Williams Smith had 12 penalty corners, including nine in the second half.

The Thoroughbreds host Castleton on Oct. 14 at 4 p.m.
