Women’s tennis celebrates its seniors

Note: In anticipation of Skidmore's virtual Commencement ceremony on May 30, there will be a team-by-team salute to senior athletes of the Class of 2020. This is the 18th of 19 presentations prepared with head coach input. Next up: riding (May 29).

The Skidmore College women's tennis team honors its class of 2020.

Renee Karchere-Sun is a chemistry major and has been Dean's List and Thoroughbred Society member every semester.  During her junior year, Renee was selected to present her research from the atmospheric chemistry lab at the iCACGP Quadrennial Symposium and the IGAC Science Conference in Kagawa, Japan.  She has contributed research that will be published in the ACS Space and Chemistry Journal. Renee was a mainstay in the lineup playing the 1-4 singles spots and 1-3 doubles spots.  She compiled an impressive 80-31 career singles record while being selected All-Liberty League player since her first year. She ranked as one of the top 25 players in the ITA Northeast Region as a junior.  She qualified for the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championships in 2019 and finished the year ranked #15 nationally.  Renee served as captain of the team during her junior and senior year.  During her career, the team won consecutive Liberty League titles since her first year and ranked as high as #12 in the country, notching wins over top 15 opponents Williams College, Bowdoin College, Mary Washington, and Johns Hopkins before finishing her senior year as the #13 ranked team in the country.
 
Jessica Ampel is an English major with sociology and business management minors.  She has been Dean's List and Thoroughbred Society throughout her college career.  Jessica has played the 4-6 singles spots and 2-3 doubles positions during her time on the tennis team.  She has been honored by the Liberty League since her first year, earning Honorable Mention in doubles and singles in 2018 and Second Team in 2019, both of which typically go to other team's top position players.  Over her tennis career, Jessica has recorded doubles wins over top ranked opponents from Williams, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Bates, Vassar, and Wellesley.  She served as captain during her senior year and even though her senior year was cut short, her contributions and leadership will be felt in the culture of the team for years to come.  During her career, the program won consecutive Liberty League titles and has been ranked as high as #12 in the country before finishing her senior year as the #13 ranked team in the country.
