No. 26 Skidmore clinches dramatic 5-4 victory at No. 33 RPI

Box Score TROY, N.Y. – A clutch performance by freshman Noah Williamson clinched a thrilling win for the 26th-ranked Skidmore College men's tennis team, picking up a 5-4 victory over No. 33 RPI, in Liberty League action at the RPI Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.

Skidmore (9-4, 5-0 Liberty League) won its third straight match of the season and earned its 34th consecutive regular season league win. RPI falls to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in conference matches.

With the match tied at four after a few grueling hours of tennis action, it all came down to fourth singles. Noah Williamson won the first set against Brian Niguidula, but dropped the second to set up a dramatic third set. With the third set tied at six, both players competed in a tiebreak. Williamson fell behind 4-3 in the tiebreak, but managed to flip the script, going on a 4-1 run to earn the victory by a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) final score.

Skidmore won its first two doubles matches to begin, as Williamson and JT Wynne defeated Andrew Imrie and Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez by an 8-6 score at No. 1 and Jason Keye and Jack McClaren defeated Niguidula and Clay Thompson by an 8-5 score.

In singles, Wynne defeated Castillo-Sanchez, the 26th-ranked singles player in the nation, in three sets at No. 1, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Travis Leaf also fought to a three-set win, defeating Imrie at No. 3 by a 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-0 score. RPI tried to mount a comeback, earning wins at Nos. 2, 5, and 6, but Williamson and the Thoroughbreds shut the door on their rivals with the aforementioned victory at No. 4.

Skidmore will face another tough league test in its next match, hosting No. 36 Hobart on Sunday, April 7 at 10 a.m. It's the first of a five-game homestand for the Thoroughbreds.
