Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team fought valiantly in doubles, but No. 21 NYU was too much for the Thoroughbreds, falling 7-2 in non-conference action at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx on Sunday.
Skidmore, ranked 17
th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Tennis polls, falls to 12-5 on the season. The Thoroughbreds will honor its seniors in the home finale against St. Lawrence on Saturday. NYU finished its dual season undefeated at 9-0, and will compete in the UAA Tournament, beginning on Friday in Florida.
"We played well but just didn't have enough against a very talented NYU team," said head coach
Curt Speerschneider. "We had a few chances to break through but just couldn't convert. All the credit to NYU for playing a very high level from start to finish. They were the better team today."
Skidmore's lone victories all came at the top slot in singles and doubles.
Risa Fukushige took down ITA Northeast singles champion and 25
th-ranked singles player Anna Maria Buraya in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Earlier in the day, Fukushige would team up with
Michelle Fuca, as the pair earned a hard-fought 9-8 (7-5) victory against Fleura Shiyanova and Vanessa Scott.
In third doubles, the pair of
Alexa Goldberg and
Jessica Ampel fell 8-6 to Rupa Ganesh and Judy Kam, as the Violets took a 2-1 lead into singles. At second singles,
Ada Wiggins dropped a hard-fought contest to Coco Kulle, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Skidmore will host St. Lawrence at the Wenger Tennis Courts, weather permitting, at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
