LEWISTON, MAINE – Junior
Jack McClaren and sophomore
Kevin Ha highlighted the Skidmore College men's tennis team's efforts as the Thoroughbreds finished day one of the Wallach Invitational, held at the Wallach Tennis Center and hosted by Bates College on Saturday.
McClaren and Ha teamed up to advance to the 'B' doubles semifinal. They began the day with an 8-1 victory over Charlie Kilborn and Christopher Caskin of Trinity, then defeated David Hernaez Sanz and Jorge Aguirre Martinez of Wheaton, 8-2 in the quarterfinal. They will take on Bowdoin's Justin Patel and Oscar Yang in the semis.
Playing in the 'B' singles bracket, McClaren made a semifinal run of his own, defeating Caskin 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16, then defeating Patel in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 10-4. He will face Jayson Fung of Amherst in the semis.
Other notable winners include
JT Wynne, who advanced to the quarterfinal of the 'A' singles bracket after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wheaton's Javier Esteban De Celis, and
Ben Maffa winning a match in the 'D' singles bracket with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Ross Kamin of Tufts. In doubles, the team of
Noah Williamson and
Suraj Mahtani won its opening match in the 'B' doubles bracket, defeating Colby's Hans Hwang and Peter Messenger, 8-6.
The tournament will conclude with the semifinals and finals matches on Sunday.
