MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Amherst advanced in the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-1 victory on Saturday over Skidmore in a match played on Middlebury's Proctor Tennis Courts. The Mammoths (7-9) will play the winner of the day's second match between SUNY Geneseo and Middlebury on Sunday at 12:00 p.m., while the Thoroughbreds finish their season at 13-8.
Amherst took a 3-0 advantage at the conclusion of doubles. The Mammoths' Claire Carpenter and Megan Adamo posted an 8-2 victory at No. 3 over Skidmore's Alexa Goldberg and Jessica Ampel. Minutes later, Amherst doubled its lead when Avery Wagman and Anya Ivenitsky tallied an 8-4 victory over Ada Wiggins and Brianna Greene in the second flight. The No. 1 duo of Camille Smukler and Kelsey Chen completed the sweep with an 8-3 triumph over Skidmore's Madie Benn and Michelle Fuca.
In singles matches, Skidmore grabbed their lone point when Danielle Giannetti posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Camilla Trapness. The Mammoths were victorious at No. 2 and No. 3 within minutes of each other to seal the match. In the second spot, Chen defeated Benn by scores of 6-4, 6-3, while Ivenitsky clinched the match in the third spot via a 6-2, 6-2 score over Fuca.
A trio of matches went unfinished when the match was secured. Atop the lineup, Skidmore's Wiggins claimed the first set 7-5 against Amherst's Smukler. At No. 5, Adamo won the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4), while Renee Karchere-Sun was ahead 2-1 in the second. Greene claimed the opening set (6-4) against Wagman in the sixth slot, while Wagman held a 4-1 advantage in set number two.
