SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A big test for the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team is on the horizon as seventh-ranked RIT comes to town with first place in the Liberty League standings on the line Saturday at 2 p.m.
Skidmore (6-3, 2-0 Liberty League) enters the weekend as the lone undefeated team in league play after dominating victories against Vassar and Bard. The Thoroughbreds have also won five straight games – the longest streak since a six-game run in 2011.
The Skidmore defense has been strong during the win streak, allowing just 23 goals in the last five games. Skidmore leads the league in team save percentage (.619) and is second in caused turnovers per game (11.22).
Individually,
Chris Baughan has had a fine season. The junior goalie leads the Liberty League and is seventh nationally with a .624 save percentage and is second in the conference with a 7.45 goals against average.
Will Lukas leads the team with 30 points on 11 goals and 19 assists,
Brendan Halloran is second in scoring with 15 goals and six assists, and
Cody Legeza leads the team in goals with 18 and is third in points (19). On the defensive end,
Ryan Warnock leads the team with 44 ground balls, while
Alex Towey leads the team with 14 caused turnovers.
RIT, the seventh-ranked team in the latest USILA/Nike Coaches Poll, comes into the matchup with an 8-2 record and a 2-1 mark in the Liberty League. The Tigers have defeated three straight ranked teams in #20 Middlebury, #4 St. Lawrence, and #5 Cortland and have won the last five Liberty League titles.
The Tigers are led by two of the best goal scorers in the league in Chad Levick and Ryan Lee. Levick is second in the conference with 28 goals to go along with 10 assists for 38 points and Lee is second in points with 47 on 26 goals and 21 assists. Patrick Hannigan leads the team in both ground balls (45) and caused turnovers (18). In goal, Nick Nesbitt has started in nine of 10 games, posting a 10.47 goals against average and a .531 save percentage.
Last season, RIT scored the first eight goals en route to a 15-4 victory in Rochester on April 9. RIT has won all five of its all-time contests with the Thoroughbreds.
