WILTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's tennis team remains unbeaten in team play, defeating NYU 8-1 in non-conference action at the Wilton YMCA on Saturday.
Skidmore, ranked 27th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III rankings, and eighth in the Northeast region, improved to 4-0. NYU, ranked 17th in the region, falls to 1-1.
The Thoroughbreds dominated in doubles play to get to the 3-0 lead. The team of
Kai Yuen Leung and
John Wynne opened things up with an 8-3 victory at first doubles, and
Lucas Pickering and
Steven Koulouris took the 8-4 advantage in the second slot.
Travis Leaf and
Ted Berkowitz fought through a tough third doubles match, prevailing by an 8-6 score.
In singles play, Leung (6-1, 6-1 over Benedict Teoh at first singles) and Pickering (7-6 (4), 6-4 over Matt DeMichiel at third singles) won in straight sets for the Thoroughbreds. Wynne (7-5, 3-6, 6-2 over Vishal Walia at fourth singles) and Leaf (6-2, 2-6, 10-3 over Yanick Parsch at sixth singles) each rebounded from dropping second sets to win. At fifth singles, Berkowitz rallied from dropping the first set, defeating NYU's Michael Li 2-6, 6-2, 10-4. Umberto Setter picked up NYU's lone point at the second spot, defeating Koulouris 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The Thoroughbreds will next head to California, taking on Bowdoin in Claremont on March 12 at 5:30 p.m. NYU faces off against Brandeis in Waltham, Mass. on Friday at 6 p.m.
