FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The 22nd-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team dropped a close match to #15 Mary Washington, falling by a 5-4 score in the opening match of the UMW Blue/Grey Invitational Friday evening.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 6-3 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 7-3.
Skidmore nearly mounted an incredible comeback after dropping all three doubles matches.
Danielle Giannetti made quick work of Mary Washington's Danielle Mirabella, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 at #6 to get the Thoroughbreds on the board.
Michelle Fuca grabbed the second point with her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Caroline Mosberg at #3.
Renee Karchere-Sun rallied from a tough second set, rebounding to defeat Rachel Summers 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at #4.
Mary Washington picked up the important fifth point at fifth singles. Mary Washington's Hannah Jabusch needed three sets to outlast Skidmore's
Brianna Greene, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Ada Wiggins later survived a marathon second set to defeat Kait Brogan 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the top spot for the final point.
The Thoroughbreds will continue play with a matchup against #17 Trinity (TX) Saturday at 3 p.m.
