Thoroughbreds close in Maine

BRUNSWICK, Maine—The Skidmore College women's tennis team hung tough with Bowdoin College, before losing a close 6-3 match Sunday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds took a 2-1 lead after doubles behind the efficient 8-5 win by Michele Fuca and Ada Wiggins at number one and the tie-breaker 9-8 (7-1) win at number two from Renee Karchere-Sun and Alexa Goldberg.

Skidmore nearly had the sweep after a narrow 9-7 loss at number three doubles Brianna Greene and Jessica Ampel.

Risa Fukushige had the lone win in singles with a 6-2,7-6 (11-9) win at number three.

"This weekend was a true test to see what kind of team we have," said Skidmore head coach Curt Speerschneider. "I'm extremely happy with our work ethic and compete level all weekend. We gave ourselves a ton of opportunities to beat some of the top players in the country. Against Bowdoin on Sunday we had them against the ropes but couldn't quite close it out. It literally came down to a few points that went their way. We need to be more comfortable with leads and closing things out, which is what we know we need to work on. Overall, a fantastic effort."

It was the first loss of the fall for the 3-1 Thoroughbreds who return to action Feb. 24 for a Liberty League match at William Smith.
