Dennis Maier scored his first two collegiate goals and
Marc Cibelli added a pair of his own to lead the Skidmore College men's hockey team to a 7-3 New England Hockey Conference win over Castleton University Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

It was the first game of a home-and-home series for the NEHC travel partners. The teams face each other on Saturday in Rutland at 7 p.m.Â

The Thoroughbreds climb to 5-13-4 overall and 5-7-3 in the NEHC, while the Spartans drop to 6-15-1 and 5-9-1 NEHC.

Castleton took advantage of the game's first power play, when Patrick Thornton found himself all alone in front for a 1-0 lead at 4:54. Simon Teodorsson and Fabio Kley assisted.

Skidmore scored the next five goals to open the game up.

Maier notched his first goal when his shot worked its way through traffic and into the net to tie it at 15:09. The power-play goal was assisted by
Luke Alletzhauser and
Adam Moodie. The Thoroughbreds forced a neutral zone turnover that resulted in a breakaway goal for Cibelli at 19:35 from
Anthony Bird and Alletzhauser and a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Skidmore scored the lone second period goal when
Will Golden corralled a rebound off a blistering shot from
Jack Sloan at 5:37.

A wild third period featured seven goals. Cibelli got it started when he sniped one from the top of the circle for a power-play goal at 1:57 from Moodie and
Connor Pelkey. Alletzhauser made it 5-1 at 8:22 from Golden and
Kenny Nelson.

Castleton opted to yo-yo goalie Ryan Mulder for the final 10:20. It paid off when Trevor Hanna scored the extra attacker goal from Charles Bando at 14:50. It then cost the Spartans shortly after when
Max Hegge scored the empty netter from
Quentin Campbell and
Sam Bloom at 15:33.Â

With Mulder back on the bench, Fabio Klay connected on a power play, extra attacker goal at 16:37. Derek Gingera and Kurt Johnson picked-up the assists. Skidmore responded again when Maier scored an empty netter his own end from
Mickey Foley at 17:40 for the 7-3 final.

Skidmore had a 31-24 shot advantage.
Jack McDonald had 21 saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Mulder finished with 24 saves.
