Men's lacrosse announces hire of John Maloney as assistant coach

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse head coach Tucker Kear has announced the hiring of John Maloney as his assistant coach for the 2017 season. Maloney will assist in recruiting, player development, as well as serve as an offensive coordinator for the Thoroughbreds.

"Coach Maloney was one of the top players for one of the most dynamic offenses in Division-1 for four years," said Kear. "His playing experience, not just in the college ranks, but for the Chesapeake Bayhawks, will translate seamlessly to what we are trying to do here at Skidmore, which is an up-tempo, fun and creative environment to play lacrosse."

"He is an extremely intelligent young man and a cerebral lacrosse player.  I anticipate that he will provide our players with a shining example of what it takes to succeed in the college ranks, on and off the field. His intangibles as a coach are already there and that's something every head coach looks for in an assistant."

Maloney comes to Skidmore College after a year with the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse in 2016. He was drafted by the Bayhawks in the first round as the 22nd overall pick of the 2016 MLL draft. He made an impact immediately, scoring Rookie of the Week honors in his second week.

Maloney starred for the University at Albany, where he played 76 career games for the Great Danes lacrosse program in one of its best stretches in program history from 2012-2016. In his time there, Maloney, who was named team captain in 2016, made the NCAA Tournament all four years, making two runs to the NCAA Division I Quarterfinals. The Great Danes also won three America East Championships during this run.

Individually, Maloney was named to the America East All-Rookie team in 2013, All-America East Second team in 2015 and 2016, and was a USILA All-American Honorable Mention selection in 2016. Maloney was also a three-time America East All-Academic selection. He was a 2015 SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award winner and graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Human Biology and a minor in Psychology in the spring of 2016.

Maloney serves as the Knighthawks Lacrosse Camp instructor; a position he's held since 2014. He also worked as a Lacrosse Camp instructor for X10 in 2016.

"I am absolutely thrilled that he has decided to join our program and can't wait to see what we are able to accomplish with each other to help this program reach heights previously unknown to Skidmore Lacrosse," said Kear.

Hailing from Victor, N.Y., Maloney has worked as a youth lacrosse coach and referee during his time off over the last four years. He comes from a lacrosse family, as brother Ryan is a current freshman on the Cornell squad and sister Megan is a junior on Canisius' lacrosse program.
